Mauritius is an ethic and cultural melting pot, renowned for its art of living and its hospitality.

Over centuries, successive waves of European, Indian, Muslim, Chinese and African migrants have helped created our famous “rainbow nation”. Today, their descendants live together in harmony. Their legacy accounts for much of the island’s charm.

The Mauritian language, Creole, was also born from this cultural medley. Its French foundations are enriched with expressions of English, Malagasy or Indian origin. If you’re looking to brush up on your Creole, visit the blog Mauricianismes for witty and humorous explanations of colourful Mauritian idioms.

And because the best way to understand a country is to experience it, here is a selection of day trips and excursions to help you soak in the island’s unique atmosphere and create incredible memories. There’s not a moment to lose: go practice your Creole and explore an island that never ceases to amaze!

Things to experience on the water…

The beach at Flic-en-Flac is one of the most beautiful on the island. It is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon or go for a casual stroll along the shore. The lagoon is protected from the open ocean by a coral reef and can be discovered with a mask and tuba or on a stand-up paddle. Rent a SUP rents and delivers boards across the island.

Why not explore a little further along the west coast? A speedboat will pick you up from the beach opposite the villa and take you to Tamarin to meet the dolphins, then on to l’Île aux Bénitiers, where you can enjoy lunch on the beach in the shade of casuarina trees.

For the more adventurous, the coast between Wolmar and Flic-en-Flac is a popular deep-sea diving destination. Its many wrecks are home to an extraordinary array of fauna. Flic-en-Flac’s numerous diving centres offer dives suitable for both beginners and experienced divers.

Tamarin Bay has been an iconic surf spot since the 1970s. On weekends, Mauritian families gather to watch the surfers at sunset. If you’d like to give surfing a try, several surf schools in the bay offer lessons.

35 minutes’ drive to the south is the Morne Brabant (an imposing UNESCO World Heritage site). At its feet is a world-famous kite surfing and windsurfing spot, while a hike up to the summit offers breath-taking views over the island’s south coast. After your climb, cool off with a swim in one of Mauritius’ most beautiful lagoons.

To discover the historic and still-wild east coast, Croisières Turquoise offers catamaran trips between Pointe d’Esny and the legendary Île aux Cerfs.

... and on land.

Though Mauritius is best known for its sandy beaches and the crystal clear water of its lagoons, the beauty of the country’s mountainous interior will surprise you. Its rugged landscapes are punctuated by sugarcane fields, with the glittering sea a constant backdrop, appearing and disappearing over the horizon with every turn in the road.

Inside the Domaine de Wolmar, Electrobike Discovery offers family-friendly cycling trips during which you might see Javan Rusa, a local species of deer; wild boar; or the Black Roussette, a fruit bat endemic to the Mascarene Islands.

If you’re a hiking or trekking enthusiast, the island boasts hundreds of beautiful sites to discover on foot, notably the Black River Gorges. Races and trail-runs are organised year-round by the association Rando-trail & Nature. The association’s founder, Yan de Maroussem, a passionate trail-runner, also offers guided walks and hikes via Yanature.

Mauritius is also a world-renowned golf destination.

The island has no fewer than 10 professional 18-hole courses and hosts international tournaments annually. Just 15 minutes from Wolmar is the Tamarina Golf Club, designed by architect Rodney Wright of Wright Golf Design.
